The Trump movement's most illuminating and characteristic moments – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. During the period of a few weeks, the American president started showing all observers his intentions for a lavish reception room two times larger than the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing to build it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of deaths from his cuts to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and rising, and this week an analysis predicted his energy policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have attempted – truly, no previous leader would have conceived – unilaterally destroying major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, almost all of whom have business with the government.
We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the world' into 'the humble will perish to cholera'
As confusing as it is to watch the leader seek to颠覆 the old idea regarding democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion within America who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – among senior generations a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they turned a figure of love into a symbol of hate who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in scripture; this transformation occurred more slowly, across decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my childhood, as conceptually Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and because the rapidly expanding group of Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him because they identify as skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with different religions; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly not the story of a mighty king emerging; conversely, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a garage, who must quickly flee to another nation to escape secret police. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his message concerns compassion for others, especially for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and protecting. Jesus' answer to hostility is to turn the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a way to instruct the assailant; his crime policy states that when an individual takes your outer garment you should give him your sweater as well.
The obvious and direct fact that Christ from scripture requests a form of extreme compassion centered on the poor has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a controversial faith: attractive to the populace, but because of its inherent radicalness needing to be controlled. In the 1950s it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Finest Within Us
Hence I have become encouraged to observe the determined opposition to Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has served as great solace to help build the initiative that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to turn out in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities in US history.
We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or reject?
America is best defended, to put it differently, through connection to the finest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to what makes it special and magnificent, particularly the pattern of Christ. In neither case does it mean feigning the worst regarding America and Christianity was nonexistent; it signifies both modesty and conviction, a blend that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
